How to Track Your Glider's Flight Hours and Know When Your Next Service Check Is Due

Your glider is the most important piece of safety equipment you own. Manufacturers publish recommended service intervals — but tracking the numbers manually is where most pilots fall short. A paper logbook with 200 entries is hard to sum quickly. A spreadsheet works until you forget to update it.

Add your wing by manufacturer and model, log your flights as usual, and FreeFly.ing knows your service timeline. Nothing to look up, nothing to configure.

Why Flight Hours — and Flight Count — Matter

Most manufacturers specify service intervals in hours and calendar time, but some also reference number of flights. Packing and unpacking creates mechanical stress on lines and fabric that's separate from airtime. A wing flown 80 short sledge-run flights may be under more packing stress than one flown 80 long thermalling hours.

Check your wing's documentation for the specific parameters. Common thresholds are:

  • Hours: 100–150 hours, whichever comes first
  • Calendar: every 12–24 months regardless of use
  • Number of flights: some manufacturers specify a maximum number of packing cycles

A glider that sits in the bag for 18 months ages differently than one flown 120 hours in thermal conditions. UV exposure, temperature cycling, and packing stress all degrade porosity and lines. All three parameters count.

Pilots who don't track any of them often discover they've overflown an interval only when a rigger asks at a safety day. By then the wing may have been flying outside its verified performance envelope for months.

Logging Airtime Against a Specific Wing

Logging Against a Kit

If you fly a consistent combination of gear — same wing, harness, and reserve — you can create a kit in FreeFly.ing that groups them. When you log a flight against a kit, the airtime is credited to all gear items in the kit simultaneously.

This is useful when you want to track hours on multiple items at once without selecting each piece separately. If you borrow a different harness or reserve for a trip, log those flights against the individual items rather than your usual kit so the hours stay accurate.

Seeing Your Service Status in the App

Because FreeFly.ing already has your wing's service schedule, there's no manual comparison needed. Go to Gear → select your wing → the summary shows lifetime airtime and flights logged alongside your service status.

You can see at a glance where you stand against each interval — hours, flight count, and calendar time — without digging through a manufacturer manual.

Making the Most of Your Inspection Data

After your inspection, log the result against the wing: inspection date, hours at inspection, and any findings. This creates a maintenance history for the wing that lives alongside your flight log. If you sell the glider, the buyer can see the full airtime history and service record — a genuine value-add over a glider with no documented history.
