Beyond the IGC File: How Flight Stats and Insights Can Make You a Better Pilot
An IGC file is a GPS track with timestamps. It tells you where you were and when. That's the raw material. What you do with it — how you review, compare, and draw patterns from that data — is where the value comes from.
Most pilots import IGC files and move on. The flights are logged, the airtime is counted. But there's more in those records than a running total.
Seeing Your Own Patterns
Over a season, your logbook contains patterns you didn't consciously record: which sites you return to, which conditions correlate with your longer flights, how your airtime has trended month to month.
Filtering by site shows you not just how often you've flown there, but how conditions have varied across those visits. A site you've flown 30 times looks different in the data than one you've visited twice. That frequency and variety of experience is something you feel in your flying — it's useful to also see it explicitly.
Filtering by date range shows seasonal patterns. If your airtime drops sharply in September every year, you know autumn motivation is something you compensate for. If you flew more this summer than the previous two combined, that's a progression benchmark.
Gear Utilisation and Progression
If you've flown multiple wings — your first glider, a borrowed EN-C for a high-route attempt, your current glider — per-wing statistics show how each one was used. Hours on your first wing, hours on the current one, and any relationship between wing type and flight type.
This isn't just maintenance data. It's a record of your own progression: lower-rated gear when you were building hours, higher-performance gear when your skills matched it, and the hours that justify that step.
Conditions You Actually Fly In
Logbook entries with conditions notes — wind speed, thermal character, cloud base — become a reference over time. After 100 flights with conditions data, you have a personal record of what you've encountered and how you responded.
Patterns emerge: you fly more often in certain conditions, you cut flights short in others, you've had more collapses at specific sites or wind directions. None of this is statistically rigorous at 100 entries, but it gives you something to reflect on that's grounded in your actual flying rather than generalised advice.
Pilots who review this data before returning to a site they haven't visited in a year have context. They can see what conditions they encountered last time, how the flight went, and whether their notes flag anything worth remembering on approach.
Identifying Gaps
A logbook also shows what you haven't done. If your XC flights are all short hops and you haven't logged anything over 30 km, that gap is visible. If you've logged 150 flights but they're all at the same three sites, the geographic range is visible.
Seeing gaps isn't about judging your flying — it's about deliberate development. Pilots who identify what's missing from their experience can make a plan to address it, whether that's a coaching week, a trip to a different site, or simply committing to flying in conditions they've been avoiding.
A Tool for Conversations with Instructors
When you're preparing for a coaching clinic, a conversion course, or a check flight with an instructor, being able to show your logbook — actual flights, conditions, gear history, incidents — is more useful than a verbal summary.
An instructor reviewing your data can identify what you've been flying, where, and in what conditions. That context shapes the coaching session. "You've got 200 hours mostly on one site and you're looking to expand to bigger mountains — here's where we start" is a more useful starting point than guessing from a conversation.
Flight statistics aren't about turning paragliding into a data exercise. They're a tool for honest self-assessment. The pilots who progress most deliberately are usually the ones who know their own flying history precisely — not just the total hours, but what those hours look like.
